SHIBUYA ROLL CALL (2020)
Shibuya Roll Call is a clever summation of my most recent trip to Japan. The book title makes a reference to the traditional American summer camp song Shabooyah Roll Call. In March 2019, I was invited to teach skiing and English for two weeks at English Adventures, an America style summer camp for Japanese children. My invitation to teach at this camp was the catalyst for this project. The title also draws inspiration from Shibuya, the vibrant cultural district in Tokyo. During my trip, I wandered the streets of Shibuya and the greater Tokyo area in awe of its sheer size and population density.
This book provides a candid and sometimes ironic look into the Tokyo tourism aesthetic. The congested Tokyo imagery is contrasted with the weathered beauty found in the ski culture of Japan’s Nagano prefecture. I present these unedited images as a statement to the raw photographic qualities created by the camera, films, and Japan’s diverse visual qualities.
